We're always trying new varieties on the nursery and this Autumn gentian looks good this year.
Mid-blue trumpet shaped flowers appear at the beginning of September amid mats of spreading green leaves.
Autumn flowering Gentians need a moist, lime-free soil in sun or light shade but if this isn't what you have in your garden, you can still grow them in a pot or container filled with a lime-free (= ericaceous) compost. Keep it well-watered during dry periods in the summer, just as you would with a tubful of bedding plants, and it'll reward you with a spectacular show in Autumn.
