This Saxifrage grows wild on mountainsides throughout the world including the UK, forming spreading mats of dark green scaly leaves, studded in early Spring with bright purplish pink flowers.
This variety 'Splendens' which is thought to have come from the Pyrenees has large rich rose-purple flowers and with its strong growing habit is well-suited to general garden cultivation. It grows best in a cool, moist position away from full sun in a rockery pocket, a trough or the edge of the border where it won't be overshadowed by larger more vigorous plants. A north facing site would be ideal. Height 5cm.
